10 booked for rioting, causing hurt in Ponda
Ten persons from Parampai, Marcaim, were booked by the Ponda police on Tuesday after they were found to be involved in a fracas over the operation of a sluice gate. Two persons were injured in the incident, police said.
Two groups were involved in a heated argument which ended in an assault on Jaikrishna V Naik and his brother Navnath. Both groups lodged complaints, the police said.
Police sources alleged that the group of ten allegedly pelted stones at the brothers who sustained head injuries.
The Naik brothers lodged a complaint against the ten persons after being administered first-aid treatment and being discharged from the health center.
Police have booked the accused under Sections 143 (being a member of an unlawful assembly), 148 (rioting), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), read with Section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Some members of the other group filed a counter complaint against the injured persons and their supporters. Details, however, were not available.
Police said more arrests are likely. [TOI]
