10-minute traffic halt planned for earth hour across State
Traffic in the State will come to a halt for 10 minutes a la earth hour sometime around September end or October first week in a bid to bring about road safety awareness amongst motorists and citizens alike.
“This traffic halt for 10 minutes has been proposed on the lines of the earth hour so that all the stakeholders seriously think about road safety. I can’t reach out to each and every person. During the halt, we will request the driver to stop at busy traffic junctions and lecture them for five minutes, bringing awareness on defensive driving,” Transport Director Arun Dessai while addressing the second Goa State Road Safety week on Tuesday, here.
He said around 2000 NSS volunteers will be roped in to educate drivers and help propagate defensive driving.
He said the PWD Road Engineering Cell will conduct a study on the 78 accidents prone stops and suggestion remedial measures.
The Transport further said that the RTA committee will be expanded with two more members, who will identify all bus stops across the state and submit a report to the government by December for notification after identification of bus stops.
“The bus stops and signages will be put up by March 2013 all over the state”, he said, adding that the Village Road Safety and Traffic Management committees will also be in place with volunteers recommended by the 40 Legislators.
Speaking on the occasion, ex-Chief Minister Digambar Kamat underlined the need to inculcate traffic discipline amongst the children at the school level to achieve the desired results.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai lamented that road safety and traffic management is not on sound footings and called upon the authorities to take up the issue seriously. [H]
