17th century Agasaim chapel burgled

Panaji: A small statue of St Sebastian and four candle stands were found stolen from a 17th century chapel at Agasaim on Sunday. A case of theft has been registered against unidentified persons by Agasaim police.Police said the chapel is located in a lonely area and regular services are not held there. The chapel was previously opened in September and when it was opened on Sunday for cleaning, the statue and the candle stands were missing. So the exact time and date of the theft is not known, police said.The accused entered the chapel by bending the window grills, police said.Last year, burglars stole 400-hundred-year-old large statues from the Holy Cross Chapel at Naika Vaddo, Calangute. The burglars had entered the chapel similarly by breaking a window grill. [TOI]
