3 hijack truck at Loutolim, flee on seeing Ponda police

Three unknown persons waylaid a truck carrying urea at Loutolim on Wednesday afternoon and, after taking control of the vehicle, were attempting to drive it towards Ponda, but fled after the truck was intercepted by the Ponda police.
Police sources said that the truck was proceeding from Vasco and heading to Ponda. As it reached Loutolim, three unidentified persons who came on a motorcycle, stopped the truck and forcibly entered the driver's cabin. Once inside, they beat up the driver and after tying up his hands and legs, took charge of the wheel.
As they were proceeding towards Ponda, a team of Ponda police stopped the truck as part of their routine surveillance activities. Apprehending trouble, the three accused took to their heels, leaving the truck and its driver, behind. The truck driver narrated the incident to the cops who freed him.
As the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Maina-Curtorim police, the Ponda police informed their Maina-Curtorim counterparts, where an offence was booked against unknown persons on charges of abduction, wrongful restraint and assault.
While the motive behind the incident is yet to be established, police suspect that the incident was borne out of some business rivalry with the truck driver. Driver of the truck Darshan Singh, a native of Uttaranchal, sustained several injuries on different parts of his body, and has been admitted to the Hospicio hospital, Margao. [TOI]
