At the fag end of the tourism season, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) has finally identified 314 tourism-related illegal structures along its coast at Palolem, Ourem, Patnem and Colomb.
According to a list submitted by the CMC chief officer to Chairperson Ajay Bhagat, the illegal structures comprises private shacks (10), huts (75), tents (134), stalls (93), a shop, a yoga centre and a beauty parlour.
Sources said Colomb beach has been notorious for illegal tourism activities, with 100 illegal structures, while Patnem beach accounts for 94 illegal structures.
Interestingly, the list of illegal tourism structures drawn out by CMC includes names of some prominent tourism businesspersons and out-station entrepreneurs well known in the area.
The CMC list submitted by the chief officer also mentions that nine stalls at Palolem beach road have been functioning on a single permanent number, while at least three tourism entrepreneurs at Palolem operate 15 tents in excess to licenses obtained.
According to CMC Chairperson Ajay Bhagat, the CMC has issued about 70 show-cause notices to many illegal structures running tourism businesses on the municipal coast a few days ago.
“License fees along with a penalty will be recovered from these illegally running structures from the date of commencement of the tourism season. Failure to comply with the show-cause notices will be viewed seriously and stern action will be initiated, which may also include demolitions and banning the persons involved from carrying out any tourism businesses in future,” said Bhagat.
Following widespread illegalities in tourism business along the coast, CMC Chief officer Pradeep Naik informed that a proper inspection is being carried out on municipal coasts to verify the actual number and assured strict action against all illegal tourism related operations in municipal jurisdiction.
