4 arrested for illegal stone quarrying in Pernem
Officials of the mines and geology department along with the Pernem mamlatdar and the police arrested four laborers in Pernem for the alleged illegal quarrying of laterite stones at Tulaskarwadi, Nagzar, in Pernem taluka on Wednesday. The department also seized nine power tillers.
Sources said that four power tillers were at the site and five machines were hidden. Mines department officials along with the Kasarvarne panchayat sealed five machines at the site, while four were brought to the Pernem police station for a further investigation.
"Based on a complaint that illegal stone quarrying was being carried out, we raided the site and sealed nine power tillers and these have been handed over to the Pernem police. We will be filing a complaint against the land owner and the stone extractors," Parag Nagarsekar, additional director of the mines and geology department, said.
Sources said that the stone quarry is huge and the stones are being illegally extracted from the area. Sources also said that the area is part of the land acquired for the Mopa airport. [TOI]
