4 Colva panchas want ousted sarpanch, deputy back on job
Even as the Director of Panchayats, Narayan Sawant maintaining stoic silence on “guidance’ sought by Salcete BDO to break the impasse plaguing Colva village panchayat, four members of the Panchayat body had moved a resolution calling for re-instating ousted Sarpanch Snowkon Gonsalves and his deputy Blanca in office.
The move has come under criticism from the opposition group led by Menino Fernandes, who has demanded to know Panchayat Director’s silence on the guidance sought by the Salcete BDO. He has also demanded why the Panchayat Director has not convened the meeting to hold elections for the vacant post of Sarpanch and deputy Sarpanch, claiming the duo were voted out of office on February 4 in a no confidence motion.
The ruling group, however, said the order passed by the Additional Panchayat Director Jayant Tari has suspended the February 4 resolution passed by the Panchayat body which had voted out the Sarpanch and deputy Sarpanch.
Snowkon told Herald that he had served the Additional Director’s order suspending the February 4 resolution on the Salcete BDO as well as the Panchayat Director for action, but no communication came from the BDO or the Panchayat director till date.
When Herald contacted Salcete BDO Uday Prabhudessai to throw light on the stalemate at the Colva Panchayat, he said he has sought guidance from the Panchayat director how to go about the matter. He said the Director of Panchayats had appointed an Administrator to manage the affairs of the Panchayat body following the ouster of both Sarpanch and the deputy sarpanch. “In this connection, I have asked the Director for guidance”, he said, while declining to comment on the Panchayat resolution calling for the reinstating of both the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch.
That the Panchayat authorities decided to allow the stalemate to continue assumes significance given that the district court, South had also stayed the panchayat director’s order appointing an administrator. [H]
