400 pension forms issued to seafarers
Retired seafarers, widows and their family members queued up at the South Goa district collectorate to collect application forms for the pension scheme, 2012.
Around 400 forms have been issued by the Collector’s office to the applicants till date since the process got underway from Tuesday.
Director NRI office, U D Kamat said that sufficient number of forms have been dispatched to the Collectors of both North and South Goa district for distribution to the beneficiaries.
He said the forms duly filled will be accepted by the office of NRI Commissioner after December 10 for scrutiny and approval. “A three-member panel, including two representatives from the seafarers’ associations have been inducted on the panel to scrutinize the forms,” he added.
Retired seafarers and widows are eligible to apply, Kamat said, adding that the beneficiaries will receive a monthly pension of Rs 2500.
The scheme will initially remain in force for a period of five years. The government has made a budgetary provision of Rs 1 crore to fund the scheme taking cognizance of the long standing demands of the Goan seafarers community. [H]
