5 arrested at Borim for illegal sand extraction


The Maina Curtorim police on Tuesday arrested five persons on charges of illegally extracting and transporting sand from the Zuari river bed under the old Zuari bridge at Borim and seized a canoe and four vehicles used for the purpose.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Maina Curtorim police rushed to the site and caught all the five accused red-handed. Those arrested were the owner of the canoe, Anthony U Godinho, 65, from Curtorim and the drivers of the pickups and trucks used in the operations- Conceisao Santan Rebello, 50, from Quepem; Narayan Yadav, 45, from Sao Jose de Areal and native of Jharkhand; Jezik Oliviera, 22, from Rachol, and Abdul Rehman Lohar, 20, from Aquem-Baixo.
Police sources said that the accused were illegally extracting and transporting sand without a transit pass from the competent authority.
The accused were arrested under Rule 3 and 38 of the Goa Daman and Diu Minor Mineral Concession Rules 1985, it was informed.
"All the accused persons were produced before the JMFC court at Margao for initiating action as per law," police sources said. [TOI]
