A Christmas parade at Vasco

By Adelmo Fernandes

A Christmas parade is probably one of the best ways to get into the festive mood. Come December 22, Vascoites will witness a Christmas parade winding its way through the streets of the city with participants singing Christmas carols and live cribs on moving trailers.

The program begins at 7 p.m. and it is hoped that the light effects that will be used on the trailers will add to the festive mood. The program was conceptualised for the first time, last year, by Mr Elvino Araujo, proprietor of GO1 News and Entertainment channel.

“Last year six floats participated; this year we expect many more to join in the festivities,” Mr Araujo said. Since this is a commercial event it does not have the involvement of the church. There are Christmas serenades in other parts of the state but what sets the Vasco parade apart is the prize money that is up for grabs for the best floats. Last year the first three awards carried a cash prize of Rs 25,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000.

According to Mr Araujo this year the prize money has been increased to Rs 30,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000. It is probably because of the competition involved that people are eager to join in the parade. In all this the youth show a lot of enthusiasm. The event also brings together the people of the city in the true spirit of Christmas irrespective of faith. This year too, the float parade will end with a performance by “Belinda and the Tropicanos”.[NT]
