Activist seeks governor intervention in Lokayukta appointment

Social activist Aires Rodrigues called on the governor B V Wanchoo on Friday and sought his intervention for the immediate appointment of a Lokayukta and constitution of the currently vacant State Information Commission.
Rodrigues submitted a memorandum highlighting the need for a sturdy Lokayukta on a priority to curb the current rampant corruption and maladministration.Rodrigues has also stated that if the Chief Minister was genuinely interested in appointing a Lokayukta, all that was required to be done was to write to the Chief Justice of India and possibly to some Chief Justices of High Courts like Bombay, Karnataka and Gujarat requesting them to recommend some names.
Drawing governor 's attention that the State Information Commission remains dysfunctional, Rodrigues has stated that the selection of the Information Commissioners should be done immediately in a very transparent manner with no political interference whatsoever.
In the memorandum to Governor , he has also expressed dismay at the extensions in service and contract appointment being given beyond the retirement age as it amounted to a cruel and grave injustice to the young unemployed.
He has further urged Governor that the thrust of the government should be on public policing and invoking the concept of Neighborhood Watch across Goa.
Pointing out that the Right to Information Act requires information to be made available to the public by all the departments by uploading the same on the web sites, Rodrigues has expressed confidence that this would go a long way in eradicating the corruption with the public getting a glimpse at the functioning of the Government by ensuring greater accountability which is the objective of the RTI Act.
