Akanksha 12th at British Junior Open Squash
Dempo Goodwill Ambassador Akanksha Salunkhe finished 12th in the 18th British Junior Open Squash Tournament held at Sheffield, in the UK.
Akanksha retaining her last year’s seeding of 9/16, though having changed to higher category of Girls Under-15.
The Goan happened to be the only player from the state to have participated in the world’s best Junior Squash Tournament, the British Junior Open held in Sheffield, which was held in the UK from January 2 to 6.
With only top five of the players from each country being allowed to take part, there were a total of 420 players from 38 countries in the 18th consecutive events being held in Sheffield.
This was the second time that Akanksha was participating in this tournament. While getting a bye in the first round, she played her second round match with Lucy Turmel from England, winning it by 3-1. In the pre-quarter finals she lost to Zhoe Foo from Malaysia 3-0.
Later for the position of 9-16, she won against European No 1, Cindy Merlo from Switzerland, 3-1.
However, in the next match for position 9-12, she lost to German No 1, Saskia Beinhard, 3-2. [NT]
