Akanksha settles for third place
Dempo Goodwill Ambassador in squash, Akanksha Salunkhe stood third at the sub-junior/junior squash nationals which concluded recently at the CCI Club in Mumbai. She was seeded No 6 and as such bettered her seeding because of this feat.
Akanksha produced good tennis in the event winning the pre-quarter finals against Vedika Arun of Chennai 3-0. In the quarter-finals, she easily beat Aishwarya Bhattacharya of Mumbai 3-0.
In the semi-finals, Akanksha went down to Juhi Kalgutkar of Mumbai 3-0, but made amends for this loss by winning the play-off for the 3rd position against Ashita Bengra of Chennai 3-0.
In fact, she has been consistently losing to Aishwarya Bhattacharya for the last 3 years. Finally, the Goan lass managed to go over this mountain and that too with a clear win of 3-0.
Akanksha’s brother, 9-yr-old Yash Salunkhe stood 15th overall.
"Akanksha has been very fortunate to have this huge support from the house of Dempos which has made her one of the most experienced player on the circuit," remarked Akanksha’s father Cdm Hemant Salunkhe.
"I am sure she is progressing well towards her march for Olympics. Her coach Rahman Saiyed is indeed proud to see his ward exceeding the targets set. The support of Navy in the form of the club and the school has been superlative," Salunkhe continued. [NT]
