Appoint panel for speed governors: HC
The high court of Bombay at Goa has recently directed the state government to appoint a committee for considering suggestions mentioned in a public interest litigation seeking implementation of installation of 'electronic speed limiters' in commercial vehicles. Disposing a public interest litigation filed by students of a law college, the division bench observed thus: "We deem it fit and proper to direct the state government to appoint a committee, which shall consider all the suggestions, which are made by petitioners in the petition and take a decision in accordance with the law and if possible within 12 weeks."
The petition was filed by Charles de Souza, Raelene Antao and Dipti Arolkar. Referring to the contention of the petitioners that the state government should be directed to ensure that all the commercial vehicles are installed with speed governors, the court stated that such a general direction cannot be issued by the court by issuing writ under PIL jurisdiction of the court.
