Archbishop calls for faithful to be inspired by Rani Maria

Panjim: Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao has called on the faithful to be inspired by the witness of Christian life and service Bl Rani Maria gave during her short life time. The archdiocese held a solemn thanksgiving mass on Monday at Se Cathedral, Old Goa, to honour India’s first woman martyr, Blessed Rani Maria FCC. The Mass began with a colourful tribal prayer dance, put up by the Sisters of Mater Dei Institute, Old Goa. The Archbishop said, “May her life of intense prayer and courageous service, especially to the poor and oppressed, inspire all of us to live our lives in a challenging way. She was a true witness of the life of Jesus.” Sr Rani Maria, a native of Kerala, was martyred on February 25, 1995 when on her way to the Provincial House, in the jungle of Nochampur Hills, Indore, by Samundar Singh, then 28 years old. Singh, after serving imprisonment of ten years, was forgiven by the entire family of Sr Rani Maria by tying a Rakhi on his hand and being accepted as a brother. On November 4, 2017, Sr Rani Maria was beatified at Indore. The Church now prays for her Canonization. [H]
