Sao Jose de Areal registered a 6-4 victory via tie-breaker against Curtorim Gymkhana in the finals to emerge champions in the Vodafone inter-village football tournament, organised by CRSC, Navelim and played at Rosary ground on Sunday.
Both the teams were level 2-2 in the normal period of play. It was Curtorim Gymkhana team that was leading 2-0 at half time with goals coming from the boots of Bruno Fernandes (7th minute) and Tony Dias (13th minute) but Sao Jose de Areal rallied splendidly to come from behind and level the score in the second session.
Francisco Barreto scored in the 37th minute and ten minutes later Roney Monteiro struck in the 47th minute to restore parity for his team.
The teams then battled it out without any further score and went in for the tie-breaker, where for Sao Jose de Areal Rodney Fernandes, Bersal Oswin Viegas, Mariano Fernandes and Aggio Antao scored accurately, while Curtorim Gymkhana could find the mark only through Joaquim Carvalho and Tony Dias.
The winners Sao Jose de Areal received cash prize of ` 20,000 besides trophy, while runners-up Curtorim Gymkhana had to be content with ` 15,000 and trophy.
The following individual prizes were given: Best Goalkeeper: Luis Dias (Areal); Best Forward: Aggio Antao (Areal), Upcoming Player: Joseph Gomes (CRSC Navelim); Best Half of the Tournament: Mariano Rebelo (Areal), Best Forward of the Finals: Milagres Fernandes (Curtorim Gymkhana); Best Half of the Finals: Tony Feranandes (Curtorim Gymkhana); Best Defender of the Finals: Bersal Oswin Viegas (Areal); First Goal of the Finals: Bruno Fernandes (Curtorim Gymkhana); Man of the Finals: Francisco Barreto (Areal).
Fisheries Minister and local MLA, Mr Avertano Furtado was the chief guest for the finals and distributed the prizes in presence of guest of honour Mr Alberto Colaco and Parish Priest of Navelim church, Fr Jose Roque Gonsalves. [NT]
