Arthur refuses to quit MMC post

The stalemate over the fate of Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva continues with a meeting of the 11 ruling Councilors at the residence of BJP leader Bhai Nayak ending in a deadlock.
Three of the ruling Councilors comprising of Sadanand Naik and wife Babita, besides Avinash Shirodkar walked out of the meeting held on Tuesday evening after a proposal was mooted to extend Arthur’s term to three months.
The anti-Arthur group reminded Bhai Nayak that Arthur and Pratima were mandated to step down from office after 11 months as per an agreement amongst the 11-member group, even as the Arthur camp argued that the agreement made no sense after it was violated on the day of election of the Chairperson as evident by the cross voting.
What’s interesting to note is that during the meeting the Vice-Chairperson Pratima Coutinho was requested to withdraw her resignation from office.
Pratima, however, told Arthur on Wednesday that she is firm in her decision to quit as per the agreement, and made it amply clear that she would not withdraw her resignation.
Given that the meeting at Bhai Nayak’s residence has failed to yield any result, sources in the know said the anti-Arthur group is bracing up to move a no-confidence-motion against the Chairperson.
Sources in the know also said the group is also planning to call on the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and his Fatorda counterpart Vijai Sardesai seeking support of their Councilors to vote out Arthur from office.
In the 20-member Council, the nine Councilors owing allegiance to both Digambar and Vijai have not made their position clear till date, preferring to watch the differences in the ruling group from the sidelines.
Incidentally, Chairperson Arthur has said time and again that he would quit the post only if majority of the Councilors ask him to do so.
Meanwhile, former MMC Councilor Ramdas Hazare has said the Councilors should vote out Arthur from office if he fails to honour his word to step down from office after 11 months. [H]
