Asnani to pay Sonsoddo a visit today

The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is moving quickly to complete pending work at the Sonsoddo garbage treatment plant, with the Ahmedabad-based waste consultant, P U Asnani, scheduled to visit the site on Sunday.
Sources told STOI he is likely to make a powerpoint presentation on the treatment plant to the MMC councillors on Monday. On March 11, at a special meeting convened at the municipality, the councillors had passed a resolution to invite Asnani to give a presentation, following which they would sign an agreement for one year for consultancy services over the plant.
It was discussed that as per the concession agreement between MMC and Fomento and its consortium, Asnani's services had to be incorporated for verification of work of setting up the solid waste management facility at Sonsoddo and also for clarification of work carried out as per the tender documents.
An earlier resolution, passed on October 12, 2012, had decided to cancel the work order issued to the consultant as the project was almost in the completion stage as per the status report. The council had proposed to form a sub-committee to monitor the progress of the work.
But following the intervention of the high-powered committee headed by chief minister Manohar Parrikar, the special meeting was convened earlier this month.
MMC chairperson Arthur D'Silva, at the meeting, had explained to the councillors the urgent requirement to sign the agreement with Asnani so as to certify the bills raised by the project concessionaire as there was no other alternative.
Neither MMC engineers nor PWD engineers are willing to take on the responsibility of verifying the bill, sources explained. [TOI]
