Assault accused in Shiroda gram sabha remanded

Ramachandra Naik, who was arrested on charges of assaulting a senior citizen during the Shiroda gram sabha, has been remanded to seven days judicial custody by JMFC Ponda.

It may be recalled that Rajaram Naik (63) from Shiroda had filed a police complaint against Shiroda Panchas, Meghnath Shirodkar, Amit Shirodkar, Ramchandra Naik and another villager. The complainant had alleged that the four assaulted him during the gram sabha on Sunday.

Acting on the complaint, Ponda Police arrested Ramchandra Naik, while Panch Meghnath and another villager were reported to be absconding.

Police said the fourth accused, Amit, who was called at the police station on Sunday for investigation, is also reported to be absconding.

Police further informed that they were trying to ascertain Amit’s role in the assault. However, when Amit was called at the police station on Monday, he did not turn up.

Meanwhile, Panch Meghnath has moved for an anticipatory bail, while Ramchandra Naik has moved for bail. All the four accused have been booked under Section 307 IPC (attempt to murder). [H]
