Avertano firm on dropping acquisition of Salpem land

Miffed over the stand adopted by the PWD on the question of dropping land acquisition proceedings vis-à-vis the Salpem lake, Fisheries Minister and Navelim MLA Avertano Furtado has asserted that he would not allow acquisition of even an inch of land for expansion of the sewerage project.
“I have discussed the Salpem farmer’s demand with Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, who has promised to de-notify the land under acquisition admeasuring 2.53 lakh sq mts. There’s no question of the PWD officials insisting on the land acquisition,” he said.
The Navelim MLA said “let the PWD look out for alternate land if they want to expand the sewage treatment plant site taking into account the future requirements. They just cannot take away the land of the farmers under the guise of expansion and buffer zone”.
In fact, Avertano made it categorically clear that the PWD cannot hope of getting an inch of additional land beyond the compound wall of the STP plant. “If they cannot manage the affairs on the existing land admeasuring 35,000 sq mts, let them look out for alternate land”, he asserted.
A PWD Superintending engineer had raised serious reservations over the plan to de-notify the land admeasuring 2.53 lakh sq mts under acquisition.
The Navelim MLA had taken up cudgels for the agitating farmers and had got the acquisition proceedings in abeyance through the intervention of Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar.
Farmers of Salpem lake had been agitating against the government’s land acquisition proposal ever since it was proposed during the tenure of former PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao. [H]
