Avertano warns MMC over Navelim garbage

The garbage menace facing Navelim village threatens to spill over to neighbouring Margao.
An agitated Navelim MLA and Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado on Thursday threatened to stop Margao sewage from flowing into the Sewerage treatment plant located at Sirvodem-Navelim if the Margao Civic body refuses to accept waste from Navelim.
With the waste problem turning from bad to worse in his constituency, Avertano telephonically spoke to Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva to accept Navelim waste at the Sonsodo waste dumping site. He argued that Navelim villagers have suffered over the years on account of the location of the sewage treatment plant located at Sirvodem-Navelim and wondered why Margao cannot accept waste generated in the village. “Leave aside the sewage flowing into the sewage treatment plant, sewage waters from Margao have contaminated and polluted the Salpem lake, Navelim. Water wells in the village have been devastated by the sewage waters carried by the water nullah via the Kudchadkar hospital,” Avertano maintained.
He recalled that the Goa State Pollution Control board had a couple of years ago directed the Margao Municipal Council to stop sewage water from flowing into the Salpem lake near the Kudchadkar hospital. “But, Navelim villagers never took the law in their hands understanding the problems faced by Margao. But, we want the Civic body to reciprocate and help Navelim to overcome the waste problem”, he said.
Replying to a question, the Fisheries Minister said that the Margao Civic even need not come to collect the waste from the village, saying “we have the vehicles which can directly dump the waste at Sonsodo.”
“Since I became the MLA nine months ago, we tried our best to manage the waste. I even allowed my property to be used for the disposal as a temporary solution, but absence of a site has turned the problem from bad to worse,”  he added, while making an appeal to the government as well as the Margao Municipal Council to consider his request on a positive note.
