Banyan tree branch crashes on house, kills boy, injures 4

Mapusa: Eleven-year-old Samarth Revodkar died on-the-spot after a branch of a huge Banyan tree collapsed on the roof of his house. Samarth was a resident of Revora.The incident took place around 1.30 am on Sunday. Four others of the family, Samarth’s mother Suvarna and one Ashwini were critically injured and the deceased’s cousin sisters Prachi and Priya received minor injuries. They were immediately rushed to the district hospital, Mapusa.In the incident, three houses owned by Sunil Revodkar, Narayan Revodkar & Janhavi Revodkar were also damaged.Since the Banyan tree was a part of Vetal Devasthan, the case to chop off the tree was pending at the Dy Collector Mapusa for almost nine year’s and the hearing of the same was scheduled on July 4.Mapusa Police immediately reached to the site. Fire-fighters chopped off the branch and cleared the debris. The loss is yet to be estimated. Samarth’s body was sent to GMC for post-morten. [H]
