Betalbatim resident arrested, released

Benny Fernandes, a resident of Ranwaddo, Betalbatim, against whom the Colva police on Wednesday had registered an alleged offence of wrongful restraint, was taken into custody by Colva police after he was discharged from Hospicio hospital, Margao. Police further said that he was arrested and later released on bail.

Colva police, when contacted, confirmed that Fernandes had been taken into custody and that he was interrogated. It may be noted that MLA, Mr Francisco Xavier (Mickky) Pacheco, has lodged a complaint alleging that Fernandes rode his bike in a rash and negligent manner and further wrongfully restrained him and abused him in a foul language. Further Mr Pacheco has alleged that Fernandes also assaulted him, thus causing injuries to his right hand. The incident took place on Wednesday when Mr Pacheco was on the way from Hotel Odets to Seraulim
church.

Colva police said that an offence under sections 279, 341, 325 and 504 of IPC has been registered against Fernandes and the case is being investigated by PSI, Mr Mangesh Volvoikar. Police said that they have recorded some statements in connection with the case. According to Colva police, Mr Pacheco was proceeding towards Seraulim when Fernandes overtook and stopped the MLA’s car. Fernandes was also allegedly hurt in the ensuing ‘scuffle’. [NT]
