Bhakti gets her WGM title
Goa Carbon Brand Ambassador Bhakti Kulkarni’s long wait for her Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title was finally over when the FIDE, on Thursday, officially cleared her title thereby making the chess wizard Goa’s first Woman Grandmaster.
A player has to achieve three norms to be awarded the title of Grandmaster and the Goan had scored her three norms at Marienbad (Czech) in January 2011, Asian Junior (Sri Lanka) in June 2011 and Caissa Int (Hungary) in September last year.
“I am very happy to become Goa’s first Woman Grandmaster,” an elated Bhakti said.
“It’s a dream of every chess player to achieve this feat and I am glad that I could finally achieve it.
“I have now become coach Raghunandan Gokhale’s first student to achieve this feat and that makes me all the more happy. Sir will be very happy and proud of my feat,” Bhakti said.
Bhakti chose to dedicate her achievement to her parents, her coach and her sponsor Mr Shrinivas V Dempo, about whom she said “without Dempo Sir’s help and support my achievement would not have materialised.”
“I will now strive hard to achieve IM and IGM titles,” Bhakti said while setting her sight on the next targets. [NT]
