Bike-borne thieves strike Portuguese tourist

One more case of a foreign tourist being robbed of her shoulder-handbag has been reported in Calangute, the second such incident since last Sunday.

Police said that Alves da Silva Mendonca Maria Manuel, a tourist from Portugal, presently residing at Gaurawaddo, Calangute, alleged that on Tuesday morning at around 11.30 am, when she was walking on the road near St Anthony's chapel junction, two unknown persons on a motorcycle snatched her orange-colour handbag containing 3,000 in cash, a credit card, reading glasses, a mobile phone, and other items including medicines, all totally worth around 9,000.

The culprits then made good their escape. Following the complaint, the Calangute police registered an offence under Sections 356 and 379 IPC, and are conducting investigations. Such incidents have been occurring in Calangute despite police presence on the roads. Locals have been complaining that the policemen posted on the roads are all new recruits and are lethargic in discharging their duties because of inadequate training. [TOI]
