Book Vasco rape under ST Act, say activists

Cyril Fernandes, a resident of Alto-Chicalim, has written to the police inspector of the Mormugao police station to register the rape case of the seven-year-old victim that occurred in a school at Sada under the provisions of the Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, in addition to the provisions of IPC and other laws applicable to children.

On Sunday morning, a group of five citizens including Auda Viegas, Cyril Fernandes, Albertina Almeida, Michael Fernandes, and Joao Fernandes submitted the letter with the demand 'To apply the provisions of the Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, in the matter of the sexual assault on a student at Mormugao'. They stated, 'Investigations revealed that the seven-year-old victim belongs to the ST community. The provisions of the said act amended to date have not been applied in this case, so far.' [TOI]
