Borkar elected sarpanch of Sancoale panchayat
Mr Ramakant Borkar was elected unapposed as sarpanch of Sancoale village panchayat on Wednesday, after the High Court directed the director of Panchayat to conduct the election on Wednesday.
The High Court has directed the director of Panchayat, Mr Narayan Sawant, the block development officer, Mr Manuel Barretto and executive magistrate, Mormugao, Mr Nathan Afonso to remain present during the elections, which were presided by Mr Nicolous Quadros.
It was AN expected victory for Mr Borkar since there was just a single nomination filed. Mr Borkar garnered support of 7-member in the 11 member panchayat. Mr Barretto after conducting the necessary formalities for the election, announced Mr Borkar to be the new Sarpanch of Sancoale.
It may be recalled that Mr Narayan Naik was voted out of power through a no-confidence motion, alleging that he did not take into confidence the ruling members while taking any decision. [NT]
