Caitano assures to raise issue of garbage disposal in assembly
Expressing concern over the growing garbage problem of the coastal panchayats, the Benaulim MLA, Mr Caitano D’Silva, on Tuesday, assured to raise the issue during the forthcoming assembly session.
Mr D’Silva along with Environment Minister, Ms Alina Saldanha, took part in a plastic clean up drive held by two schools in Benaulim.
“I am convinced that coastal panchayats from the Benaulim constituency are facing the garbage disposal problem. The government has failed to address the problem. We are now trying to create an awareness regarding plastic waste with the hope of solving it, atleast partially,” Mr D’Silva said urged all the shopkeepers to stop using plastic bags.
He assured to complete the plastic drive throughout the constituency within three months.
Mr D’Silva opined that the government should also play a vital role, specially, when it comes to taking action against those going against the government decisions.
The Benaulim MLA explained how a couple of sites identified by few of the panchayats to dispose off waste were rejected by the government and other concerned agencies because they were close to River Sal.
He further stated that he had already spoken to the Chief Minister regarding finding a suitable land that can take care of the garbage generated along the coastline.
He stated that he would speak to the Chief Minister requesting him to consider treating dry garbage generated in the Benaulim constituency at the MMC plant, Sonsoddo. [NT]
