Calangute Association down YBT, Curtorim hold Laxmi Prasad

Calangute Association drubbed Young Boys of Tonca (YBT) 3-0 in 6th Round GFA First Division League football match at Poriat ground, Calangute, Sunday. Calangute led 1-0 at half time.
The kick-off was delayed by five minutes as the fourth official failed to turn up and eventually, the match commissioner had to perform the duties of the fourth official.
Calangute started strongly and could have taken the lead in the second minute but striker Franky Oliveira shot wide with only the rival goalkeeper Parsappa Harijan at his mercy. They played good short passes and surged ahead in the seventh minute. Nicholas Fernandes sent in a defence splitting pass to Manuel Crasto, who slotted past Parsappa.
The opener came as a confidence booster for Calangute, who could have scored their second in the 21st minute after hardworking midfielder Royston Pereira had cleverly set up Nicholas but the latter’s chip shot over onrushing Parsappa missed the mark narrowly.
At the other end, YBT tried hard to score the equalizer and their best chance came in the 30th minute after Terence Lobo’s well-measured free-kick sailed over the rival defenders and found Allwick Fernandes, whose close ranger was blocked by Calangute defender Ryan Pereira on the goal-line.
In the next minute, YBT were unlucky as Terence’s venomous long ranger hit the horizontal.
Just before the lemon break, Calangute made a surprising substitution replacing Royston with Stalin Baptista.
After resumption, Calangute continued dominating the proceedings as Nicholas scored from inside the box to make it 2-0 in the 54th minute.
YBT strikers could not break through the strong Calangute defence and hence could not trouble the rival goalkeeper. Their lack of bench strength added to their woes as they had only one player Percival D’Silva on the bench, who substituted Denzil Cabral in the 60th minute.
Subsequently, Percival’s 40-yard shot in the 80th minute and Terence’s rasping shot in the 82nd minute were blocked by Calangute goalkeeper Marshall Fernandes.
With two minute from time, Calangute scored their third goal after Xamarao Rodrigues sent in an intelligent pass to substitute Prannoy Godinho, who broke the off-side trap and scored with an adroit placement.
Calangute have collected 13 points from six matches while YBT suffered their sixth consecutive defeat.
Our Margao  Correspondent adds– Curtorim Gymkhana managed to hold Laxmi Prasad Sports Club, Mapusa to a goalless draw in a GFA First Division League football match at DYSA ground, Curtorim, Sunday.
Both sides had equal number of chances to score in the first half but failed to convert them. Laxmi enjoyed slight edge over their opponents in the opening session. Laxmi captain Sherwin Lobo worked overtime with his forward Lavino Fernandes to put the rival defence under tremendous pressure.
Laxmi could have taken the lead in the second session, but Sherwin’s snap shot kissed the post off a pass from Lavino. Later, Sherwin’s blistering shot missed the mark narrowly after Sachin laid him on the platter.
In the 58th minute, Laxmi nearly surged ahead but striker Alvito Miranda’s header missed the target narrowly off a Domnic Fernandes chip.
On the other end, Curtorim came close to taking the lead but substitute striker Roy Colaco’s try was collected by Laxmi goalkeeper Shilton Fernandes.
With this draw, Curtorim Gymkhana continued with their unbeaten run with 12 points from six matches while Laxmi have 14 points from six encounters. [H]
