Calangute Association pip Panjim Footballers

Mapusa: Calangute Association secured a solitary goal win over Panjim Footballers in the Goa Professional League match, organised by Goa Football Association, played at Duler Stadium, here on Sunday. With this three points, Calangute climbed to the 5th position with 22 points from 17 outings, while Panjim are struggling in the relegation zone with just 15 points from 16 matches. Domnic Fernandes was back in the line-up for the Beach side which drew against FC Bardez in the last round match, while Kunal Kundaikar and Sachidanand Satelkar made the comeback in the Panjim starting XI after missing out in the last match where they held Vasco SC to a 1-1 draw. Calangute were the first to look at the goal in the very first minute when Josley Dias collected the loose ball just outside the box and went for glory from the top of the box only to see it miss by hairline distance.
The next 20 minutes saw Calangute completely dominating with continuous attacks where first, Josley set up Joston Pereira with just keeper to beat but the midfielder fumbled with the ball.A few minutes later, they had another open chance when U-20 winger Leslee Britto sent a diagonal pass to Mayur Satelkar in the box but his shot was brilliantly blocked by the Panjim custodian to keep his side clean.Panjim had only one chance in the entire session came in the 28th minute when Israeli midfielder nicely curled the ball to Sachidanand in the box with just rival keeper at the stake but the winger failed to control the ball as the Calangute keeper comfortably collected the ball.Unlike the first half, the second session began with sloppy football from both the ends where the first 15 minutes were restricted to the midfield play. However, in the 60th minute, Calangute surged ahead through substitute Ashok Megheri when he leaped high to head the ball in the net off U-20 Leslee’s cross to make it 1-0 for his side.Just after the goal, Calangute once again tried to control the match with better ball possession and attacking index, however in the last few minutes, Panjim played their hearts out but the Calangute defence led by Amar Halankar gave no space for Panjim attacks to capitalise on their chances as the Beach side confirmed all three points from the match.
