Calangute gets van to collect garbage
A brand new van for collecting garbage was donated to the Calangute village panchayat by a charitable trust in association with a hotel, at a function on Wednesday morning. This is the third van donated by corporates to the Calangute village panchayat in recent months, according to the panch member Joseph Sequeira. Three more vans are in the pipeline, he added.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, sarpanch Anna-Marie D'Souza and others were present for the function, while Hindu and Catholic priests blessed the vehicle. A spokesman for the hotel said that though officially it's still a village, Calangute has grown into a city because of the large number of tourists, hotels, traffic, etc, and it needs to organize itself in terms of infrastructure, for which the hotel extends its support by donating the vehicle.
Michael Lobo said there are plans to set up a garbage treatment plant atop the Calangute plateau to tackle the garbage menace in the Bardez coastal belt. "The CM is planning to set up a central garbage treatment plant at Verna, but that will not be able to solve our problem here. We need to get together with a few other coastal panchayats like Arpora-Nagoa, Parra and others and set up a garbage treatment plant on the Calangute plateau on the site which is currently being used to dump garbage by the Calangute panchayat," he said, adding that the Calangute comunidade has agreed to hand over the land.
