Calangute Association played their hearts out to register a 2-1 win over Clube Sao Minguel Taleigao in the GFA’s First Division League match played at Poriat grounds, on Friday. All the goals were scored in the first session of play.
Calangute moved to 22 points, while Taleigao stay on 12 points after their 10th round match.
Calangute went into the breather leading by 2-1 margin. Manuel Crasto netted a brace, while Gautam Kankonkar pulled one up for Taleigao.
Calangute forged ahead in the 3rd minute as Manuel Crasto scored off a defensive lapse by the Taleigao defenders.
Taleigao managed to level terms in the 19th minute as Gautam Kankonkar scored from a goalmouth melee.
Calangute keeper Marshal Fernandes produced a superb save, as he brilliantly parried the ball over the post to deny Vincy Fernandes a 20-yard shot entering the goal.
Three minutes later, Royston Pereira set up overlapping Manuel Crasto on the right flank, who moved upfront and sent a cross which dipped into the far corner of the goal, beating keeper hands down, 2-1.
In the 38th minute, Franky Oliveira and Manuel Crasto was thwarted by Taleigao keeper Risven Fernandes.
On crossing over, Joe Colaco dribbled past a host of Taleigao defenders and latched on to a left footer which was collected by Risven.
Taleigao’s medio Bazileo Rego worked over time in the mid-field and in the 60th minute latched on to a long ranger, which sailed inches over the post.
The next ten minutes was dominated by Taleigao, who pinned their opponents into their own half. Substitute Pramod Mardolkar who came from the bench in the 63rd minute drilled a low shot which went just a yard past the side post.
Nicholas Fernandes almost showed his magic by dancing past a couple of Taleigao defenders, but was thwarted by keeper Risven in a one-to-one situation. Minutes later, once again keeper Risven superbly blocked substitute Xamaro Rodrigues’ fierce shot which hit the side post and the ball travelled into play.
At Duler grounds Mapusa, Laxmi Prasad trounced Salcete Football Club 5-0.
Laxmi were leading by two goals at the breather. Both the goals came through Alvito Miranda who scored the first in the 18th minute through a header and in the 23rd minute with a gentle tap.
On crossing over in the very 1st minute Stanley D’Silva scored off the outstretched legs of keeper Bryan Fernandes. As the match progressed Steven Fernandes made it 4-0 with a stiff grounder, while Alvito Miranda netted his hat-trick from the penalty spot, 5-0. [NT]
