Candolim cemetery vandalised
Miscreants vandalized the cemetery of Our Lady of Hope Church at Candolim by removing six graveside crosses on Thursday night. Calangute Police has rounded up one person in this connection.
The incident came to light on Friday morning when some parishioners went to the cemetery to offer prayers at the graves. Some crosses were removed and kept aside, while one was placed at the entrance gate. One cross was thrown into a gutter near the Dr Gustavo Monteiro Stadium.
However, there was no damage to other property in the cemetery.
When contacted, Candolim Parish Priest Fr Rumaldo Robin Rodrigues admitted that few crosses were removed and thrown elsewhere, while one was thrown near the Candolim market.
Acting on a complaint by the Church attorney, Calangute Police registered an offence against unknown persons and a police team led by PI Nolasco Raposo conducted investigations at the cemetery. Fingerprint experts and a police dog squad were also pressed into service. Calangute Police later rounded up one person in this connection.
“Five graveside crosses are removed and kept aside, while one was thrown in the gutter near the Candolim football ground. The crosses are, however, intact and police is investigating the case,” PI Raposo told Herald. [H]
