Candolim lift Honey Bee Friendship Cup

Candolim Sports Club registered a 5-4 win via sudden death over Sangolda Lightning Sports Club to lift the glittering Honey Bee Friendship Cup, organised by Quitula Sports Club and played at Quitula grounds on Wednesday.

The teams were locked in a goalless draw at the end of the 70 minutes duel.

Both the sides had an attempt each at the goal in the first session of play. Govind Bhatkar free kick from outside the penalty box was saved by the Candolim keeper Marshal Simoes. In the 28th minute of play Sachin Chopdekar had only the Sangolda keeper to beat, but he shot wide.

On crossing over, Candolim had better ball possession and shots at the rival goal through Sigmound Sequeria, Jolief Simoes and Bapu Pednekar.

Candolim received the winners cash prize of `20,000 and a trophy, while Sangolda Lightning had to be content with runners-up trophy and cash prize of  15,000.

Mr Glen Souza Ticlo, MLA Aldona, was the chief guest and distributed prizes in the presence of Dr Rufino Monteiro, Chairman GFDC, Mr K Gopinath, Dy GM United Spirits Ltd, Mr Alberto Colaco, Secretary SAFF and Ms Ujwala Kandolkar, Sarpanch Aldona. Also present were GFA members Mr Lavino Rebello, Mr Babli Mandrekar, Mr Alirio Lobo and Mr Schubert Furtado. Mr Blaize D’Cruz compered the function.

Following individual prizes were awarded—Best Goalkeeper: Washington Pereira (Sangolda); Best Defender: Gauresh Porob (Sangolda); Best Midfielder: Jolief Simoes (Candolim); Best Discipline Team: FC Siolim. [NT]
