Carnival festivities begin in Goa today

Goa’s biggest and most colourful event, the Carnival takes off officially on February 9, with the much anticipated Panaji Carnival float parade. The tableaux will assemble near the Divja Circle up to the Ribandar-Merces junction and the parade will take off from there at around 2 p.m. The tableaux will start moving from the Ribandar causeway at around 2 p.m. and upon reaching the old secretariat, the actual parade will begin at 3 p.m. The parade will culminate at the Kala Academy, Campal, where the tableaux will be allowed to park at the Bandodkar football ground on DBB Marg. On Friday evening, a curtain raiser was held at the Garcia de Orta Garden in the heart of the city, for which an ambience of traditional Carnival was created so as to welcome King Momo and his Queen on February 9. The Garcia garden was tastefully decorated and was given a great look by mounting huge masks, dazzling light effects around the Samba point, and loud music along with the Carnival theme song was played to infuse and revive the spirit of Carnival and get a festive mood. There were jokers attired in techni-coloured costumes entertaining children with their antics, novel dances and funny comments. Loads of photographs were taken by the gathered revelers with the participants. The children had a great time at the garden.[NT]
