Case against department contractor

The Margao town police on Monday booked an offence against a contractor engaged by the sewerage department, after some electricity cables got damaged while the road was being dug up for laying underground sewer lines in the town. A major part of the city plunged into darkness on Sunday night for several hours following the puncture of the cables.
A complaint in this regard was lodged with the police by assistant engineer of the electricity department, Mario Furtado. Acting on the complaint, the Margao town police booked the contractor, Rock Drill Projects Ltd, under Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Property Act.
Such incidents have been occurring regularly in Margao of late. Just last month, acting on a complaint lodged by the South Goa collectorate with regards to a similar incident, the Margao police had booked an offence against an engineer of the sewerage department on charges of negligence.
Taking cognizance of the incident, South Goa collector, N D Agrawal, held a meeting with the officials of the sewerage department and the electricity department on Monday evening so as to work out ways to ensure better coordination among both the departments and minimize damage to electricity cables during the road-digging work.
It was decided that the officials of the electricity department, sewerage department and the water supply department will meet on 1st and 15th of every month in order to share information about the location of service lines in the area where the digging work will be carried out during the fortnight.
