Caught in garbage rut, PMC abandons new site

Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has abandoned the new site identified to dispose garbage following objections from some locals.

PMC had identified a private land away from settlement area at Collem. However, some villagers objected to it, thus forcing the land owner to stop PMC from using the land for disposing daily collected garbage.

It may be recalled that since July-end, PMC is finding it difficult to manage garbage disposal as several sites identified by the PMC had to be abandoned following public outcry.

PMC since the last few days had cleared heaps of garbage that were lying uncollected from various garbage collection points. However, the collection stopped after PMC had to abandon the new site due to public opposition.

When contacted, PMC Chief Officer Pradip Naik nor Chairperson Rukmi Dangui were available for comments.

Ponda Deputy Collector Johnson Fernandes had convened an emergency meeting to discuss the garbage management issue. The meeting was attended by CHC Health Officer Nutan Dev, PMC chairperson and councillors and Ponda PI Sagar Ekoskar. It is learnt that Fernandes directed PMC to take short-term as well as long-term measures to tackle the issue. [H]
