CBI catches passport tout with Rs 600 bribe


 Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Morjim resident NarayanHaldankar outside the regional passport office, Panaji, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 600 to issue a passport to a person.
CBI had received complaints that there are touts outside the passport office, who demand money to issue passports and make appointments. CBI verified the complaint and laid the trap to arrest the tout.CBI said Haldankar, through personal influence with a "corrupt public servant of the passport office", was issuing passports and arranging appointments for people. The role of the public servant in the passport office is being scrutinized.
"We have arrested Haldankar under Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act," CBI said. CBI has registered a case on the basis of the complaint and have also verified other anonymous similar complaints. The trap was laid by investigation office Sakharam Parab. A few months back people at the passport office had agitated over not getting appointments with passport officers. [TOI]
