Church prays for new pope, thankful for Benedict XVI papacy
The Catholic community, clergy and other religious groups spent March 9 as a day of prayer, in thanksgiving for the guidance of Pope Benedict XVI and praying for a worthy successor to lead the Church.
Many parishes observed a holy hour in the evening, followed by a special mass, as the laity and the clergy prayed in unison for a worthy leader.Charismatic Renewal, a movement within the Catholic Church, also observed a night vigil from 10pm on Saturday to 5am till Sunday morning at the Bambolim shrine. Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao adressed the participants in the vigil for halfan hour.
"The Church thanked God for the contribution of the Pope Emeritus to guide the Church for eight years and also prayed for the light of Holy Spirit for the cardinals to elect a worthy candidate as a new pope," a church leader said.
Ferrao had issued a circular last month urging all rungs of people in the Goa and Daman archdiocese to spend the weekend prayerfully for the twin special intentions.
Many families, religious communities, small Christian communities and prayer groups offered prayers, including the Holy Rosary, day-long adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. [TOI]
