CM promises funds for Romi Konkani

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday, told the House that even as he wasn’t keen on making any changes to the Official Language Act, he would give all the necessary funding for Romi Konkani to develop.
Replying to the discussion on demands for grants, for Official Language, Parrikar said changes were not necessary and there were more pressing matters on the government’s plate rather than creating controversy over the official language.
During the discussion, MLAs including Caetano Silva and others had demanded official status to Romi Konkani while others demanded the same for Marathi.
However, Tivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar said that whipping up the issue was unnecessary and that the current Act was already accommodative of all sections.
He said the leaders should focus on developing the State rather than dividing it. “I assure that all necessary funds will be given to Romi Konkani,” Parrikar said adding that it was a language that is in use and that he was not going to touch the Official Language Act in the near future. [H]
