CM shoots back over Sardessai’s SSC remark

Asserting that government does not interfere in the functioning of the Goa Board of Education, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday questioned Goemkar President MLA Vijai Sardessai’s knowledge and intelligence on the subject.
Referring to Vijai’s statement on the commencement of SSC examinations on March 28 on Maundy Thursday, Parrikar said that examination dates are not finalized by the government. “How can Vijai blame me for finalizing the examination dates? The Education Department is an independent authority. The Chairman of the Board is a Catholic. He should know whether the decision to hold examinations on a particular date would hurt the religious sentiments of the community,” Parrikar said.
The Chief Minister reminded the Fatorda MLA that though a Chief Minister technically appoints the judges, he cannot influence or direct them to function in a particular manner. “This is also true in the case of the Education Department. I cannot interfere in the functioning of the Board and its Chairman,” he added.
The Independent MLA had on Monday chided the Chief Minister and held him responsible for holding the first SSC exam paper on March 28, which happens to be Maundy Thursday. [H]
