CM slammed for making a ‘mockery’ of Lokayukta Act

The government has come under criticism for amending the Lokayukta Act in the ongoing assembly session.

Suhaas Naik, Goa unit president of the All-India Youth Federation(AIYF) termed the amendment to the act "a mockery of the Lokayukta Act rendering the Lokayukta toothless, meaningless and ineffective". He felt the government has made a deliberate attempt to discourage filing of complaints against corrupt public functionaries by threatening complainants with a fine up to 10 lakh and imprisonment of 3 years.

Naik also slammed chief minister Manohar Parrikar for his statement equating the Lokayukta to a vigilance director. "This mentality of the chief minister to state that the Lokauykta will be just like a vigilance director needs to be condemned," said Naik.

Naik said instead of strengthening the Goa Lokayukta Act, the amendment to Section 19 which has been sought to curb and discourage filing of complaints against corrupt public functionaries will discourage the filing of complaints against those who are involved in corruption and scams. [TOI]
