The budget session of the state legislative assembly would begin on Monday with the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar presenting the budget for the financial year 2013-14 on the opening day of the session. He would also present the report of the economic survey before presenting the budget.
This is for the second year in succession that Mr Parrikar would be presenting the budget after taking over the reins of the state after the elections to the state assembly last year. He has earlier presented budget consecutively for four years in his first innings as the Chief Minister.
With the state economy hit by suspension of the mining activities, the people, especially those affected by the closure of mining expect Mr Parrikar to announce measures to help them in the budget. The state budget has been prepared after taking views of people, industrial, trade and commercial bodies and others into consideration.
The session that begins on March 18 is expected to end on April 30 with the assembly meeting for 28 days, during which the government would hold general discussion on the budget besides discussing he demands for around 80 departments and passing them.
This is the longest session of the assembly in over a decade. Besides, passing the budget the government is also expected to present several bills for the consideration of the House and passing them. The government is likely to answer over 2,500 questions during the session besides taking up private member resolutions and bills for consideration. [NT]
