Collectorate yet to seal two plots with hazardous waste at Cuncolim
Even nine days after the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) issued directions to the district collector to seal the two plots containing hazardous waste in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, action is yet to come from the district Collectorate till date.
The GSPCB had on December 17 directed the South Goa district Collector to seal the premises at Plot no L-2 and L-3 at the Industrial estate. GSPCB officials said the Bord had deputed one of its personnel to personally serve the order on the district Collectorate a day later on December 18. Incidentally, district Collector N D Agrawal has repeatedly feigned ignorance about the GSPCB directions, saying he is yet to come across the order in his routine mail.
Sources in the know said the district Collectorate indeed received the GSPCB directions on December 18, but the mail somehow did not reach the district Collector. When Agrawal inquired with his staff on Wednesday, an employee confirmed having received the GSPCB directions, but a communication gap resulted in the delay in placing the same before the Collector.
GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Norohna on November 17 revoked with immediate effect the Consent to Establish (NOC) ordered dated March 1, 2012 issued by the Board to Ms the Axis for the establishment of a unit to manufacture cement products at Plot No-3 at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
The Board has further directed Ms The Axis to immediately stop the handing or removal of hazardous waste dumped at plot Nos L-2 and L-3 at the Industrial Estate until further orders. The GSPCB has warned to initiate additional stringent legal action against the Management of Ms The Axis in accordance with the provisions of the Water Act and Air Act for failure to comply with the directions.
