Colva cries foul over… Dune destruction
A week has lapsed since the wanton destruction of a sand dune came to light at Colva, but the developer remains still at large till date.
Inspection of the sand dune has revealed that the party has excavated land admeasuring 80-100 mts by using earth machinery.
While the Colva police questioned the labourers working at the site, besides attaching the shovel engaged to destroy the sand dune, investigations into the case have not been taken to its logical conclusion till date.
Incidentally, exactly a week after the sand dune was destroyed by a party, the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority on Tuesday lodge a FIR against the concerned persons for destruction of the sand dune.
In his complaint lodged with the Colva Police, GCZMA Member Secretary Levinson Martins urged the police to investigate into the matter and initiate action under the provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986 against those who were employed to carry out the destruction/excavation of the sand dune and also against those who have employed persons and machinery for the purpose of causing destruction to the sand dune.
Commenting on the inaction against the main persons involved in the denudation of the sand dune, social activist Judith Almeida demanded action against the main accused in the case.
“The questioning of labourers and attachment of the machinery means nothing to us. Poor labourers do not know the legal and illegal aspect of the work. The owners should have been taken into custody. This is a clear way to protect the real violator,” she said.
Demanding that the Parrikar government, which talks about good governance, should take cognizance of the police department role in the case, Judith said the property owner should have been booked first and then deal with the labourers.
“This sand dune was mercilessly destroyed last Tuesday. The developer was sitting in his vehicle supervising the destruction, while the labourers went about cutting the trees. This is a serious violation. It takes thousands of years for a sand dune to take shape. We demand that the police nab the culprit involved in the destruction and the restoration of the sand dune as well as the forest trees,” she said. [H]
