Cong leaders clamour for action against ‘rebellious’ Mauvin

With Mr Mauvin Godinho, the Congress legislator from Dabolim, continuing to heap praises on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government and neglecting his own party’s strategies on the floor of the House during the ongoing assembly session, there is a growing cry from among the Congress leaders and workers for action against him.

The demand for action against Mr Godinho grew after he turned down the request of his party colleagues to participate in the walkout to protest the government decision to put off election to the post of mayor and deputy mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji. He also did not join the delegation that called on the Governor, Mr Bharat Vir Wanchoo subsequently.
Many in the party feel that failure to take action against Mr Godinho would be seen as weakness of the party to deal with indiscipline. The sources in the party, however, said that action has not been taken against the Dabolim legislator as the leader of the opposition, Mr Pratapsing Rane was against any action against Mr Godinho.
Mr Godinho, on the other hand, said that why should only his actions be seen as anti-party activities when some of the Congress’ own leaders allowed the party to be broken even as they went on hobnobbing with the BJP during its earlier rule. He said that some Congress leaders were holding high posts then.
The Congress leaders have accused Mr Godinho was praising the BJP and the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, to save himself from any action in the case of de-notification of land acquired for expansion of Dabolim airport as well as the case involving him with regards to power rebate when he was the power minister.
A senior Congress leader told The Navhind Times that nobody in the Congress has approved of the “indiscipline” behaviour of the ‘rebellious’ Dabolim legislator, who has been critical of the party even when it was ruling just above a year back.
“If he did not like the way the party was being run and that he was neglected he should have quit it and fought on BJP ticket,” the Congress
leader stated.
The Congress pointed out that Mr Godinho was all praise for the budget of Mr Parrikar last year, and so also this year. They also said that he has been speaking against the Congress and its leaders at various fora and refused to walk out with his fellow party legislators recently.
According to the Congress leaders, Mr Godinho has been helping the government by his indiscipline even as they accused him of “cheating” the party during the by-elections to the Cortalim constituency. His favour for the Mopa airport project was because of his land adjacent to the airport project, they added. [NT]
