Cong wants 35 wards reserved for SCs

Panjim: Ahead of the notification on reservation and delimitation of wards for the panchayat elections, Congress has demanded that there be reservation for Schedule Castes (SC) in all 12 talukas with a total of 35 wards reserved.Addressing media persons on Monday, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) office bearer Shambhu Bhai Bandekar opposed the SC reservation in nine wards in Pernem and Bicholim talukas. “If you are going as per the SC population then it is spread across the State and not just in two talukas. Considering their population, not less than 35 wards should be reserved for SCs,” Bandekar said, threatening to approach the Court on the issue. For the first time, the Government has announced reservation of two percent of the seats for SCs in the panchayat polls scheduled on June 11. Of the 1522 wards in 186 panchayats, nine wards have been reserved for SCs.
Bandekar said the party had submitted a representation to the Directorate of Panchayats demanding reservation for SCs in each taluka. In another move, Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress on Monday protested the mutilation of the bodies of Indian soldiers and slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to appoint a fulltime Defence Minister.GPMC President Sunita Verenkar said, “Despite the attacks on Indian soldiers, the country has no full-time Defence Minister. This is the irony. We request Prime Minister to protect our jawans who are fighting on the border.”The Mahila Congress said they are collecting bangles to present to Union Minister Smriti Irani to remind her about her jibes against earlier Congress governments whenever Indian soldiers were killed by Pakistan.
