Cong wants all MLAs in mining study panel

The Goa Congress on Sunday demanded that the government not restrict to a few talukas its dole to mining affected people and include all MLAs, Congress as well as independent in the ‘study committee’ that the chief minister has said, he would constitute.
Addressing the media, spokesperson Sudip Tamhankar said that while he welcomed the move of the government, it was unfortunate that it was being restrictive.
“We welcome the move of the government and simultaneously demand that people from all talukas be made eligible for the dole; Why is it that only those from the five talukas ~ Bicholim, Sattari, Dharbandora, Sanguem and Quepem ~ are made eligible for the dole,” Tamhankar said, adding that it was unfair to exclude those people from Mormugao involved in dockyards and barges as well as those from mining areas of Bardez and other talukas.
He also hit out at the government for not including names of Congress and independent MLAs in their ‘study committee’ to deal with the mining issue.
“We hear that in the study committee that the chief minister is forming, the names of the MLAs Pramod Sawant, Nilesh Cabral and others from the mining belt are included. We wish to ask why the names of either Vishwajit Rane or Pratapsing Rane are not being considered or that of Naresh Sawal or Babu Kavlekar,” Tamhankar asked. [H]
