‘Congress leaders have looted State exchequer’
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday categorically stated that Congress leaders right from former Chief Minister Digamber to party president Subhash Shirodkar are involved in illegal mining and have looted the State exchequer.
“From Digamber to Shirodkar, all are involved in illegal mining and have looted the state for decades,” Parrikar said adding, “these people are now challenging me to prove it.”
Parrikar was speaking was responding to Shirodkar’s statement last Saturday, where the latter had expressed surprise to see his name in the affidavit filed by the government before the Supreme Court in the Rs 35,000 crore illegal mining scam case. Shirodkar had also said that government is free to file a case against him and impose a penalty.
The ruling coalition has trained its guns on Congress politicians involved in the mining and export of iron ore, alleging their involvement in illegalities. Former Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao, former Pernem legislator Jitendra Deshprabhu and Shirodkar have been named in the 170-page state affidavit filed before the Supreme Court.
The M B Shah Commission in its report on illegal mining had castigated former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for allowing illegalities in the sector. [H]
