Consistency has been hallmark of Cuncolim Union
Inter-village football tournaments have been the feature of Goan football be it in North or South and the one team that has been doing consistently well in these tournaments is Cuncolim Union team which has to its credit a host of titles in recent times.
The team plays as a well-knit unit and gels well in their endeavour to annex inter-village trophies. The club, the villagers as well as the executive members say is fortunate to have Mr Elvis Gomes as its president and that under his leadership the Cuncolim Union Club has made rapid progress in several spheres.
The trophies won by this club are exhibited at the Club House for everyone to see which is surely an indication that Cuncolim Union is one of the top-performing Goan inter-village club with it main focus being on football, according to the feedback provided by the club’s vice-president, Mr Prakash Rama Dessai.
Mr Rupak Naik is the treasurer while Mr Oscar Gracias and Mr Dinesh Naik are the secretary and asst-secretary respectively. All of them work as a team to keep the club’s flag flying high.
Mr Prakash Dessai and some of the club’s executive members told The Navhind Times how the club has been carrying on the good work in the interest of one and all in the village of Cuncolim.
Asked what has been the secret behind Cuncolim Union’s success and the kind of dominant role it has been playing in inter-village football tournaments, Mr Dessai said: “There are many factors which add to the team’s success. First of all, I must mention that our club could be among the few clubs in Goa that has its own Club building which is spacious and having 600 sqmt built-up area. As such our youngsters take advantage of the various facilities that are available including those doing regular practice on our own ground.”
Mr Dessai while spelling out the reasons for the team’s success maintained that practicing together gives the boys the confidence to go forward and play the game well as they can understand each other and know exactly what to do while in action on the playing arena.
Cuncolim Union has won a number of tournaments to ensure they keep stealing the thunder from time to time. Bandodkar Gold Cup, Nerul Panchayat Cup, Holy Cross Kakoda,Lourdes-Ambelim,Immacualte Conception, Quepem, Chandor Seamen, Davorlim panchayat cup are trophies that this south-based team has won.
On the team’s star players, Mr Dessai commented: “All our players are good enough and all of them are stars in their own right.”
When asked to specify, Mr Dessai said that midfielder Myron Fernandes, striker Daulat Dessai and defender Velip Dessai are some of the star players.
On the team’s representation at the GFA tournaments, Mr Dessai said: “We are in the third division and just missed qualification after losing to Guardian Angel.”
Cuncolim Union has produced good players in the past and has to its credit some known names.
Robert Fernandes, Jerry Fernandes, Shogun Agiar, Levino Dias, Zeprys Mascarenahs, Mickey Fernandes, Mahesh Gawli, Keenan Almeida, Ashok Fadte, Raj Kumar Lotelkar, Nazareth Coutinho, Krishna Shirodkar, Fredy Mascarenhas, Franky Pereira and Sammy Tavares, who is now the DySP and Mr Santosh Dessai, a police inspector, are players
